BIOFUELS Technology Platform

Background

The European Union is strongly dependent on fossil fuels for its transport needs. In order to reduce this dependency the EU has adopted measures to encourage the use of biofuels as detailed in the 'Biofuels Directive' (2003/30/EC - see Legislation) and expanded in the Biomass Action Plan and Strategy for Biofuels' while priority is given to biofuels research in RTD Framework Programmes, including FP7.

To further developments in this area the Commission established BIOFRAC The Biofuels Research Advisory Council. The final report of BIOFRAC, Biofuels in the EU - A vision for 2030 and beyond included the recommendation to create a technology Platform for Biofuels.

The European Biofuels Technology Platform

The concept was accepted by the European Commission and the Platform launched at a Conference in June 2006 and The Secretariat, partly supported by the European Commission through an FP6 contract, established in October 2006.

The Biofuels Technology Platform aims to implement the major proposals outlined in the "Vision Report" that presents a long-term view on how to overcome the technical and non-technical barriers for biofuel deployment both in the European Union and worldwide.

To achieve this the European Biofuels Technology Platform is focused within the frame of research on renewable energy sources. It aims to help in the development of cost-competitive, world class biofuel technology, contribute to the creation of a European biofuels industry and to accelerate the deployment of biofuels and.

Structure

Managed by Steering Committee and supported by the Secretariat, the main objectives will be achieved through the activities of five working groups (WGs); three technology driven (vertical) WGs covering resources, conversion and end use plus two horizontal WGs dealing with markets, legislation and sustainability. Activities are overseen by a 'Member State Mirror Group'.
