IEA/CLAAS workgroup
Harvest and other mechanical pre-treatments of lignocellulosic energy crops |
This item is based on a report of a meeting held by the IEA Bioenergy Agreement working group on Agricultural Energy Crops and Residues - Lignocellulosic Solid Fuels (Task XII, Act. 3.2) in November 1996 at CLAAS, Harsewinkel, Germany. The international collaborative agreement on bioenergy was set up within the International Energy Agency (IEA) in 1978 to help establish the use of environmentally sound and cost competitive bioenergy on a sustainable basis, to provide a substantial contribution to meeting future energy demands. It offers opportunities to coordinate the work of national programmes across the wide range of bioenergy technologies through exchange of information and similar activities including the establishment of international projects. The aims include closing the gap between technological readiness and market opportunities, expanding industry involvement through special projects and other activities with a near term focus, increasing utilisation of technologies for enhanced indigenous energy production and promoting technologies with important local and global environmental benefits. The work is currently (1995 97) structured with activity on Lignocellulosic Solid Fuels in Task XII which aims to design and develop cost effective and environmentally sound biomass production, harvesting and supply systems for energy recovery.
