At present in Europe oilseed rape is the main agricultural crop used as raw material for biofuel production, with the methyl ester of rapeseed oil sold as biodiesel.

Some concerns have been expressed relating to the sustainability of this crop. Now guidelines have been developed under the Unilever Sustainable Agriculture Initiative in cooperation with UFOP in support of sustainable management practices for winter oilseed rape (WOSR) production. Ten indicators of sustainability have been identified:

For each indicator specific 'Good Agricultural Practices' are described, which are either already in place or will be implemented in the near future. In addition, potential areas for further investigation or improvement are indicated. These guidelines are based on a thorough evaluation of existing and potential agronomic practices and associated inputs. They were developed according to the principles of Integrated Farm Management (IFM).

These guidelines have been developed in consultation with relevant farmers, scientists and agronomists. Their main purpose is to provide the basis for development and implementation of good practices in consultation with farmers. Additionally, they are intended for use by agricultural development teams and for communication with WOSR processors and suppliers.
