Wood (Lignocellulose)

The BioAlcohol Fuel Foundation evolved, in 1999, from the Swedish Ethanol Development Foundation
that was established in 1983. The main aim was to develop production techniques and usage
of bio-based ethanol, especially in the transport sector. Access to raw material,
the knowledge to utilise by-products from the forest and bio energy, and the knowledge of
technical process in the paper pulp and chemical industries has been of importance in directing activities
towards the production of ethanol from lignocellulose.
Activities have included:
- CASH project which was active from 1989 - 1991
- Pilot reactor plant in Rundvik where 2000 trials were accomplished
- Pilot project at Etek(ECN)
- Pre-project studies of a full scale plant at Etek(ECN)
- Chematur & Skafab develop a strong acid method to handle house-hold waste
- Research in process techniques, LCA - studies in process optimisation have been
conducted together with LTH, CTH and other companies
- Bi-products of lignin have been studied during the period 1994 - 1997 at the Institute
of Wood Chemistry in Riga
- BAFF has together with SLU and others completed studies in raw material, cost of
imported raw material etc
- International study on ethanol from sweet sorghum with 13 partners in a EU financed
project ECHI-T.
- Processdevelopment and test on straw based ethanol together with SWAN Biomass
and NREL.
