The Biomass - Information - Centre (BIZ) is based at the University Stuttgart at the Institute for Energy Industry and Rational Application of Energies and is a specialized agency providing expertise on renewable energy raw materials on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Consumer Protection.

The purpose of BIZ is to provide information on the use of biomass as a renewable energy. BIZ aims to facilitate information transfer between producers and users of biomass energy in order to increase the use of biomass energy in Germany.

Since the beginning of the year 2000 it is possible for people/groups interested in the thermal use of biomass as a fuel (bioenergy) to receive information. For example, information can be obtained on the possibility of creating a biomass fired unit, as well as information on successful bioenergy projects which BIZ, as an information centre, can pass on - even specialists from abroad can contact BIZ for information.

BIZ is a research, development and demonstration platform - it is there to solve problems and discover solutions which have not yet been found. It is also BIZ's objective to be a competent partner in technical and non-technical problems to help increase the use of biomass to solve energy problems within an environmentally and climate friendly framework, as well as to increase the use of biomass as an energy source in Germany.

BIZ was founded in order to:

• To supply/fill the information deficit surrounding the use of biomass energy,
• To improve the transfer of information between those who supply biomass energy, the users of biomass energy and research and development organisations,
• To evaluate and analyze bioenergy products and to give recommendations based on these evaluations,
• To keep a record of development, research and demonstration, so that those interested in setting up a bioenergy project have the necessary help and support in planning and reolisation of their ambitions.
