Founded 1953 in Halle (Saale) as "Institut für Energetik", the institute,
today a Leipzig based non-profit research-company, can look back on a history
of almost half a century. Reflecting political changes this has been a long and winding
road for the institute. It's present organisational structure arose in 1994 with formation of four
sections working on various aspects of energy, including the department "energy economics
& environment" which covers "renewable energy", especially energy-supply from
biomass, although energy-industry and environmetal engineering are still vital topics of the institute.
The most important activities include:
- development, upgrade, optimisation and evaluation of energetic and environmental processes,
technologies and systems by theoretical and practical work
- initiation, realisation, moderation and coordination of big projects on the regional, national
and international level
- neutral and independent support and consulting for public and private contractors in (almost)
all questions concerning energy or the environment
- presentation of information about present developments in the fields of energy and
environment in public events
As far as biomass and renewable energy is concerned the institute is a center of competence for
power-generation from biomass with focus on solid as well as liquid and gaseous sources. It promotes
the transfer of technology and know-how by the Biomasse Info-Zentrum, whose Leipzig office is
located in the institute. In addition to biomass, geothermic and photovoltaic energy and other
renewable energy systems are important fields of research for the institute.
