CSL is an Executive Agency of the UK Government Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs. It specialises in the sciences underpinning agriculture for sustainable crop production, environmental management and conservation as well as in food safety and quality. In addition to research CSL offers a wide range of analytical, diagnostic and consultancy services designed to support the international land-based and food industries.

A periodic newsletter (CSL News) can be downloaded from their website, or received in printed form by registering on the website or contacting CSL.

In April 2003 the organisation of CSL was adapted to meet the UK Government's Sustainable Development Programme objectives. This resulted in a new-look Agri-Environment Directorate with a greater focus on environment and wildlife management as well as on the support and development of industrial and renewable energy crops. Within the Agri-Environment Directorate there are the following divisions:

• Plant health
• Wildlife ecology and management
• Environmental biology
• Agricultural and Rural Strategy (ARS)

Industrial crop development is part of the activities of ARS with the group aiming to add value to agriculture and promote uptake of novel technologies, contributing to policy development in the UK, the EU and elsewhere at tactical and strategic levels.

This work complements and is complimented by activities in the parallel Food Directore, which includes the following divisions:

• Pesticides and vetinary medicines
• Food safety and quality
• Proficiency testing
