National Activities - UK

This network of organisations interested in sustainable composites was started by the Warwick
Manufacturing Group (UK) together with the Biocomposites Centre (UK). Maintained by voluntary time and effort
with the above organisations maintaining the membership lists, website and email base. It is funded via a three year
grant from the EPSRC (UK) via the Sustainable Technologies Initiative, aided by contributions in kind from members. The aim is
to add cohesion to the disparate groups working in the area, as wel as providing informations, contacts
and industrial
connections. It covers legislation and non-technical barriers as well as scientific aspects, new raw
materials, new material science and new processes. Other aspects considered for discussion in
various meetings and workshops include future market issues such as standards for compostability,
the power of
consumers, the impact of legal measures relating to oil-based products (oil prices, carbon sink
capacity, end of life regulations).
So far over 450 members have joined from the target groups that comprise the whole supply
chain: including primary producers,
material processors, designers, manufacturers, users and waste disposal organisations. Forty
percent
of the members are from industry, and 10% from Europe, but with world-wide connections.
The network aims to disseminate industrial best practice and relevant research results as well
as to develop both small (short-term)
and larger interdisciplinary R & D projects.
To achieve these results the network organises twice yearly seminars, runs the website, and
produces
publicity material. In general the network functions to bring various interest groups together to
engage in joint activities - or simply to
talk to each other.
