Sustainable Surfactants: Renewable Feedstocks for the 21st Century |
This Item and the series associated with it as listed below are based on information presented at the above meeting and are reproduced with permission of the Alternative Crops Unit of MAFF (UK), from whom further information can be obtained. Further information is also available concerning the LINK Programme on Competitive Industrial Materials from Non-Food Crops. NF-2000 was present at the meeting, exhibiting details of relevant EC supported RTD projects covering surfactants.
Chairman's Introduction
Surfactants are performance chemicals which contain both hydrophobic (water insoluble) and hydrophilic (water soluble) groups. Each moiety can be either petrochemical or oleochemical derived and oleochemicals are already widely used in surfactant production today. Natural renewable raw materials can be an exact match for petrochemical derivatives, such as fatty alcohols, or provide a source of new hydrophobes or hydrophiles. Their use is linked to the promotion of "green", eco-friendly products, particularly in the household detergent and personal care areas, where these materials usually afford low toxicity, mild, biodegradable surfactants and resultant formulations.
