Renewable Energy Sources (Odnawialine Zrodla Energii)
English-Polish, Polish-English Dictionary

Produced by Magdalena Rogulska and Anna Grzybek

ISBN 83-86264-45-4

This book is introduced by the editors as follows:

The use of renewable energy is growing in countries of the European Union and central and eastern Europe. Many renewables are sufficiently developed to allow them to compete with conventional power systems. National and local governments have developed policies and programmes to stimulate the wider use of renewable energy recognising the valuable contribution it can make to the security and diversity of energy supply, particularly at local level. Renewable energy systems also offer the potential for reducing CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions, thereby contributing to efforts to combat global warming. In addition, they are recognised as having a major role to play in encouraging sustainable development and offering real opportunities for creating new jobs, helping to diversify the agriculture sector and stimulating regional development.

In Poland, there is already a dynamic renewable energy industry keen to supply equipment and services to domestic and international markets. Policies and programmes exist to support research, development, demonstration and dissemination activities with the ultimate objective of strengthening local expertise and experience. Financial institutions active in Poland are able to make finance available for investment in projects, in the form of grants and preferential loans. Furthermore, as Poland moves towards accession to the European Union, there are even greater opportunities for collaboration, technology transfer and the sharing of know-how between Polish and western organisations.

Against this background, this dictionary has been prepared by the staff and experts of EC BREC/IBMER from Poland and ETP Ltd from the UK. It is designed for use by all those involved in renewable energy researchers, engineers, policy makers, financiers, project developers, etc.

The dictionary includes more than 4,000 words and terms (within each section), in English and Polish, arranged in alphabetical order. This edition includes basic terminology relevant to renewables but concentrates on biogas, wind and solar energy. It is expected that an expanded and more detailed version, to include biomass, waste, hydro and geothermal energy, will be published in summer 1998.

The authors hope that the dictionary becomes a useful tool for all those interested or involved in renewables in Poland, and we welcome any comments, amendments, additions or suggestions for the future.

EC BREC / IBMER and Energy Technology Promotion Ltd are keen to develop contacts, collaboration and projects with any organisation or business from Poland, the EU or elsewhere interested or involved with renewables.
