The following European Commission publications were included as part of the NF-2000 database and were all produced with the collaboration of the NF-2000 Network:

Introduction

The NF-2000 Network disseminated information from European Commission funded programmes and other sources relating to non-food uses of agricultural crops and forest products. This included use as raw material for fine chemicals, bulk chemicals, liquid fuels, building materials (composites), paper and card, lubricants, detergents and biodegradable polymers, as well as fabrics and other fibre based products.

The NF-2000 Network ( FAIR-1904) continued the activities established by the NF-AIRID Network ( AIR-CT94-2299). However, funding of the NF-2000 network by the European Commission ceased at the end of November 1999. Both CPL Scientific and the participants appreciate the support that has enabled this work to be carried out. During the three years the network has run in this form there have been major developments in information technology, especially in relation to the development of the internet, but also in terms of hardware, software and telecommunications infrastructure, in a way that was not anticipated at the start of the project. These developments have had a marked effect on the activities of the network. In February 2000, people were logging on to the site at a rate of around 8000 per month, obtaining information through over 100,000 hits a month. Over 3000 people have registered to receive information through email, a number that grows by five to ten individuals each day.

In recognition of this interest, the website will be kept open for a few months, while other sources of funding are explored. As previously a 'snapshot' of the website was produced in March 2000 in the form of a CD-ROM containing the NF-2000 online database.

Alternative funding for continuation

Various approaches that could be adopted in order to enable the continued presentation of EU RTD activities in the non-food area are being investigated. Your comments would be appreciated and a questionnaire is provided for this purpose on the web site.

Target Audience The Network is aimed at research institutes and universities, farming unions, associations and other trade organisations, industrial confederations, industry, societies, consumer and government organisations, as well as the media serving these sections.

The network was coordinated by CPL Scientific Limited (now CPL Press) in the United Kingdom. There was a National Representative (NR) in 16 European countries - 13 European Union countries (excludes Luxembourg and Finland) plus Norway, Hungary and Poland. Enquiries from other countries were responded to by CPL.

Scope

The scope of the NF-2000 Network covered the chain from field or forest to end-user for novel products based on crops or trees.

Information included availability, collection, transport and conversion of raw materials. It covers novel uses for conventional raw materials and novel raw materials, through physical, chemical and biological processing for the specialty, fine and commodity (bulk) chemical markets as well as animal feed, pulp/paper, fibre, construction material and biofuels.

NF-2000 Network News

NF-2000 Network News was issued 4 times a year in 1998 and 1999 to all NF-2000 postal registrants. It was also available on the NF-2000 web site. On-line registrants were emailed each time a new issue of NF-2000 Network News was produced or other major changes and additions are made to the web site. Each newsletter contained a list of new information Items added to the NF-2000 on-line database. It also detailed events attended by NF-2000 and included a calendar of future events, as well as forms enabling registrants to identify partners for future research including the Fifth Framework Programme (FP5), request or offer research materials and request Items by post from National Representatives.
