Utilisation of hemp seed oil for cosmetic products, in particular skincare products
Objectives
The condition of the eco-systems calls for alternative agricultural methods. Ecologically meaningful alternatives can, however, only exist if they also coincide with the economic objectives. Hemp has the potential to fulfil these requirements. For increasing the profitability of hemp cultivation it is necessary to know all the sorts with high yields for the respective utilisation. In the industrial utilisation of hemp seed oil for producing cosmetics, a particularly high added value can be achieved, since these are products that are increasingly demanded by the consumers.
Technical Approach
The objective of this project is the optimized use of hemp seed oil in the cosmetics industry. For this purpose the hemp with the highest seeds yield and the ideal harvesting time have to be identified. Impacts of agricultural measures (soil, cultivation methods) and of production-specific measures (combined harvesting, pressing, filtering) have to be explored. By formulating test products in the production of cosmetics and due to the appropriate oil analyses, a quality standardisation is achieved, which is imperative for producing and marketing cosmetics made from hemp seed oil.
Hemp seed oil is suited for use in the cosmetics industry particularly because of its high percentage of high-quality proteins and of polyunsaturated fatty acids and due to various substances (aliphatic alcohols and triterpenes) which can be used as stabilisers in the production of cosmetics. Moreover hemp seed oil also contains vitamins which have a moisturizing and an anti-inflammatory effect. So far only little is known about these important substances of the hemp seed oil (sterines, tocopheroles, vitamins as well as material parameters like characteristic numbers and peroxide numbers) which are interesting for the cosmetics industry and knowledge about the various sorts is particularly limited.
For identifying suitable sorts of hemp and the ideal harvesting time and to be able to use hemp seed oil in cosmetics production taking into account the cultivation conditions at the locations in Austria and in France, cultivation tests are carried out at both locations, optimum refining methods are tested, seeds and oils are analysed chemically and cosmetic test products are formulated and produced. Chemical analysis methods are developed further and a European standard is created for the cosmetics industry.
