Integrated process development in the potato starch industry

Objectives

Technical Approach

The waste stream in a potato flour factory in Europe contains valuable compounds, which are very appropriate for fermentation and biomethanisation processes. The new environmental standards make it economically attractive to investigate the possibilities of turning the waste problem into a valuable production of "green" chemicals, including higher-grade protein than currently produced. Integration of innovative technologies for production of secondary products has the potential of improving the economy of the starch processing industries and simultaneously reducing the environmental impact of the overall processing system.

Expected Results

50% reduction of the energy consumption and quality enhancement of the protein extraction process by conversion of the acidic heat coagulation process into a membrane based process.
Integration of a renewable energy generation in the process scheme for removal of residual organic matter from the waste water
85% overall reduction in the discharge of COD from potato processing
50% reduction of the fresh water consumption through recirculation.
