Research and development of markets and supply strategies for short rotation forestry, forest residue fuels and conversion technology for CHP

Objectives

The objectives of this cooperative research project are to produce energy and reduce the process cost by eliminating aqueous waste and to reduce the installed cost through the use of turbo charging.

Technical Approach

  1. Reduction in environmental impact by reducing emissions from exhaust gas through engine modifications and catalytic conversion.
  2. Modify gasification conditions to enable the use of fuels with higher moisture contents.
  3. To obtain operating and cost data associated with continuous heat and electricity generation from Short Rotation Forestry (SRF) and forest residues.
  4. Develop integrated cost effective fuel supply strategies based on the use of forest residues for electricity and heat generation.
  5. Develop integrated cost effective fuel supply strategies based on the use of biomass from SRF.

Research on conversion technology will be carried out using a fixed downdraft bed gasification unit (0.5 MWth), the design of which is currently adapted to the use of saw mills residues.

A broad spectrum of expertise is involved in the research including SME's working in areas of forestry, SRF development, energy generation, and organisation of cooperatives. This is the first investigation of the production of heat and electricity from SRF and forest residue-derived fuels in a continuous unsupervised downdraft gasification process.

The research is expected to result in significant opportunities for developing:
