Composite local reinforcement for timber structures (ColoreTim)
Objectives
The project aims at improving the structural behaviour of timber elements by local reinforcement using composite materials. The results of the project should contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of the European SMEs in the timber construction sector by offering innovative solutions for designers. These SMEs have no R&D facilities. They wish to avoid having to rely on major glulam manufacturers and wish to deal with composite and resin suppliers with the help of RTD performers. For daily problems of reinforcement, it is necessary to use large diffusion composite materials and to adapt the solution to their availability and price in order not to compromise a good increase of mechanical performance by an excessive overcost.
The project will deliver design rules (simplified and finite element modelling) and recommendations for implementation (quality control) and an exhaustive list of suppliers, materials and costs to SMEs in the timber sector. Beyond the project, demonstrations are planned and a label will be proposed to other SMEs as a commercial exploitation of the results.
The scientific part of the project is focused on three problems concerning new buildings (stress concentration, moment resisting connections and tension perpendicular to grain) and the problem of rehabilitation of old timber structures; the problem of the mechanical compatibility of the reinforcement is not neglected, the recycling will be treated.
Three countries are represented in the project with one SME of timber or building sector in the core group and a group of laboratories for each country. Suppliers of resin, fibres, composites will contribute to the success of the project.
