Characterisation and control of colloids in paper mills recycling recovered papers

Objectives

In Europe, wastepaper is one of the main sources of fibres for paper and board production. Wastepaper is made up of components that can be used to produce paper and contaminants that must be removed. Some contaminants, present as relatively large solids, can be removed by screening or cleaning. Others, termed dissolved and colloidal materials (DCMs), are finely dispersed. These DCMs cannot be removed by conventional mechanical processes and cause deposits on paper machines or can cause agglomerations (secondary stickies) that induce spots on the paper sheet.

Technical Approach

In order to improve the wastepaper recycling process, the objective of this research project is to characterise DCMs from process water of mills producing various grades of papers and to compare the different solutions for the removal of these components. Firstly, common test methods will be developed in order to identify the main sources of DCMs produced in the recycling process. The properties of DCMs will be characterised with emphasis on their detrimental effects on process and paper quality. Various control techniques will be investigated with regard to efficiency, incidence on yield (fibre and usable materials loss), investment and operating costs. Techniques already developed in recycling mills (such as anionic trash catchers and dissolved air flotation) and techniques not already used for this purpose in the paper industry (such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration and electroflotation) will be evaluated. Each partner will be responsible for evaluation of a technique. The chemical supplier will propose adapted chemicals. For the main sources of DCMs already identified and the main papermill conditions, the various solutions will be compared in order to propose the most efficient and cost effective solutions. The more promising solutions will be evaluated in a continuous process in the small-scale pilot plant facilities of one of the partners. Full-scale trials wil1 then be performed in the mills of the industrial partners.

Detrimental deposits on a wire during the CTP test
(top: plugged, bottom: unplugged). Similar deposits are induced by dissolved
colloidal materials (DCM) along the paper recycling process, either on the
wet-end of the paper machine (wires) or during drying (felts, rolls, etc.).
The aim of this project is to control/remove the DCM content of the process waters.
