Polyglycerols chemistry: ecology and applications of polyglycerol esters
Objectives
Technical Approach
Conventional methods for polymerising glycerol require drastic process conditions including high temperature and caustic content. Therefore, the molecular composition is very difficult to determine and correlations between structure, performances and environmental impact cannot be established, which limits the rational design of optimised structures. Moreover, the market for polyglycerols has never been assessed.
Expected Results
The goal of the project is to provide a complete description of polyglycerol based surfactants according to critical molecular descriptors such as linearity versus branching or nature of the fatty chain, that can have a dramatic impact on biodegradation on one hand, and on the performances on the other hand.
The preparation of representative polyglycerol standards will allow the participants to evaluation for the first time the influence of structural parameters (MW, linear, branched, cyclic, fatty chain) on analytical behaviour and environmental impact.
The market for polyglycerols will be assessed: sectors, volumes, prices, requirements.
Applications
As a whole, obtaining tools able to improve processes technology and products quality, in conjunction with market assessment, will help European industry in the development of environmentally friendly polyglycerol based surfactants.
