Abstract:
The pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus,
is an important quarantine pest infesting pine trees and causing wilt diseases.
Serious damage to pine forests has been recorded in Japan and North America. To
protect the European forests, directive 77/93/EEC imposes restriction on the
importation of soft wood from N-America where this nematode and its vector are
widespread. The objectives are the development of methods for detection and
identification of the pine wood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus,
in timber and chips.
Current methods used in statutory inspection of imported timber need an improvement at three levels: sampling, extraction, identification. The objectives of this project are addressed to perfection of the methodologies practically applicable in the control procedure. Modification of sampling techniques and of methods for extraction/purification of nematode probes from wood is envisaged. For identifications and detectability of pathogenic nematodes biochemical techniques are to be modified and improved. Finally, Plant Protection Services will be involved in testing the practicability of the new methods.
