DASFAF NETWORK: Developments and applicatons in supercritical fluids in agriculture and fisheries

Objectives

The use of supercritical fluids (SCF) has developed rapidly and widely over the last twenty-five years. The possibility of obtaining new products, reducing energy consumption and eliminating the use of organic solvents have all resulted in widespread interest in this technology.

Technical Approach

The thematic network proposed aims to discuss and widen existing knowledge on SCF in the food, fisheries and related industries. The objectives are to:

Thus, we intend to increase the participation of companies in national and international cooperation programs.

Although administered by AINIA, the Thematic Network will require the enthusiasm and commitment of the participant organisations to succeed. The first project meeting will be held in Valencia (Spain) in October 1998. All participants will be encouraged to give a short presentation on the specific interests of their organisation.

This project will provide some topics to identify technology transfer and R&D opportunities for a wide range of specific problems of industry. Individual or collaborative R&D can then continue or be initiated to fulfil the needs identified. Periodically, technical group meetings will be held to assess progress on the combined research. A full meeting of the Thematic Network will be held towards the end of the 3 year program to review progress in the areas defined at the initial meeting.

Communication between different research groups and discussion of operative factors and applications of major importance are indispensable for developing new approaches. Thus increasing the possibilities of use of SCF in different areas by improving current procedures for saving energy and optimising economics (process and products).

Information dissemination and training activities will take place so that information is transferred to the industries in the food sector in the form of one-day technical courses and workshops.

Finally, the European Commission will be able to use the network as an instrument of consultation on any of the subjects with reference to the field of SCF.
