Non-toxic aminoplastic adhesive for medium density fibreboard and new application panel products of improved weather and biological resistance
Objectives
Recent concerns about the effect of formaldehyde on health are posing limitations to conventional formaldehyde-based adhesive systems that emit formaldehyde during use. Alternative adhesive systems containing isocyanates, phenolics, or tannins all have inherent problems of perceived health risks, or higher production cost.
Technical Approach
The main goal of this project is the development of a new generation of urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesives with near-zero emission coupled with improved weather resistance. The incorporation to the adhesive of additives that will ensure biological resistance of the board will also be studied.
Expected Results
I. Direct Results
II. Indirect Results
Applications
The resins developed will be primarily marketed as low cost/high quality adhesives to be used in the production of wood-based panels. Alternative applications in other industrial sectors using amino resins (such as the cork and textiles industries) will also be examined.
