Advanced Combustion Research for Energy from Vegetable Oils (ACREVO)

Objectives

The objective of the ACREVO project is to investigate and improve the combustion performances of vegetable oils as liquid biofuels for diesel engines and furnaces for local power generation and transport.

Technical Approach

The project primarily deals with pure vegetable oils as renewable energy sources. A typical vegetable oil investigated is the rapeseed oil. However, the experimental facilities and the analytical and numerical analyses developed are generic, so that the investigations are extended to various vegetable oils, to esters obtained from vegetable oils, to vegetable oil / alcohol blends, as well as diesel fuel or domestic fuel / esters blends.

Expected Results

The expected results from the R&D tasks developed in the ACREVO project are grouped into three main headings:

  1. Physical and chemical characterisation of vegetable oils as biofuels
    • Analytical and physical characterisation of vegetable oils
    • Chemical kinetic characterisation of vegetable oils
    • Characterisation of the pyrolysis and soot formation tendency of vegetable oils
  2. Characterisation of the atomisation and combustion of vegetable oils under controlled conditions
    • Characterisation of Atomisation characteristics of vegetable oils
    • Characterisation of burning characteristics of vegetable oil droplets
    • Characterisation of the pyrolysis and combustion of vegetable oil
    • Characterisation of soot formation in laminar prevaporised vegetable oil flames
    • Characterisation of soot formation in turbulent prevaporised vegetable oil flames
  3. Characterisation of global energetic and environmental performances of diesel engines and furnaces fuelled with vegetable oils
    • Analysis of vegetable oil spray combustion in furnaces
    • Analysis of vegetable oil fuelled diesel engine performances
    • Development and characterisation of injection systems fuelled by vegetable oils

Applications

The ultimate goal of the ACREVO project is the analysis and prediction of the global energetic and environmental performances of diesel engines and furnaces fuelled with vegetable oils, their derivatives and blends.
