FAIR Area 4.5 - Multifunctional Management of Forests

Type of Project Shared Cost

Total Cost 1,990,922 ECU
EC Contribution 1,260,000 ECU
Start Date 01/03/98
Duration 39 months

The European black poplar (Populis nigra) is a unique pioneer species belonging to the riparian ecosystem. It has social and economic importance and is an ideal species for the study of conservation biology.

Objectives

This project aims to develop strategies for the conservation of European black poplar and its restoration in riparian ecosystems, based on the measurement of the genetic diversity in wild populations at different levels. The current state of conservation in an ex situ gene bank will be described. Guidelines for in situ management and reintroduction strategies will be formulated. Populations with a broad genetic diversity will be maintained to ensure adaptation to new environmental conditions and that breeding programmes are provided with new genotypes.

Activities

In this project specialists from the European forest genetic resource programme are working together with molecular geneticists so that traditional methods can be combined with modern techniques and the results of the project will be comparable with former studies. The high level of standardisation of methods and techniques in this project will ensure a synthesis of the genetic diversity of P. nigra in Europe. The European black poplar was recognised as an endangered species by the countries that signed the Strasbourg Resolution No. 2 on the protection of forests in Europe. This resolution was also adopted by the European Union.
