Abstract

The appropriate use and management of the rural areas in the context of the multifunctionality and the rural economies poses fundamentally new questions and approaches to science and policy both in EU Member states (MS) and Associated candidate countries (ACC). At present the knowledge base is still embedded in the national agricultural research systems.

A new assessment of the scientific priorities as well as a new approach in management of knowledge to be utilized by all stakeholders is needed. Therefore an increased necessity for policy oriented and demand driven research is demonstrated to provide solid base for consolidation of all involved actors.

In order to create appropriate environment for gathering and networking stakeholders from the ACC a two-day conference was organized in Sofia, Bulgaria. The event sought to demonstrate that engagement of all stakeholders and especially the scientific community that is needed for providing required knowledge base according to CAP concept. It will be considered as first step towards development of well and sustainable functioning rural areas.

The project was structured as two Plenary sessions and four Parallel sessions dedicated for interactive brainstorming on specific thematic clusters. Strategic document was elaborated as main deliverable describing relevant actions to be taken in consideration by the policy makers for the smooth adaptation of the ACC to CAP.

This document can be considered as logical follow up of changing face of rural Europe and the complexity of challenges involved in the sustainable development of rural economies.

Conference presentations may be found on the website.
