Abstract

The objective of this project is to outline a research and development roadmap and to recognize new and emerging developments in nanotechnology and related areas suitable for practical application in the forest products sector.

The project investigated relevant European inter-disciplinary research, networking and international cooperation to promote the collaboration between the forest products industry cluster and relevant fields of nano technologies and nanosciences.

The forest products cluster is strong in the Nordic countries due to their large forest resources. The European chemical industry cluster is the strongest in the world. A close and symbiotic relation between the European forest industry and chemical industry clusters in the development of nanotechnology for refinement of renewable forest raw materials would provide a substantial step towards global competitiveness and a sustainabledevelopment.

The question NANOFOREST aimedto answer is whether nanotechnology can provide the forest products industry with radical innovative changes in its production processes in order to enhance competitiveness of the products or find new 'smart' product areas, along with an improved sustainability.

The partnership involved researchers from two research institutes, STFI (contractor) and TRAETEK (subcontractor), and two universities, KTH (subcontractor) and HUT (subcontractor), active in central fields of forest products oriented research. Hence, the partnership covered the forest products industry from fundamental scientific levels to industrial implementation.
