This section (Theme 3) covers the creation of the scientific base for the transition of European
production industry from a resource-based towards a knowledge-based, more environment-friendly
approach. Encompasing nano-technologies and long-term interdisciplinary research extending to
new materials and engineering techniques, a number of projects concern renewable biomaterials, the use of natural raw materials and the application
of methods that could become of relevance to the non-food industries.
