The Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development of the European Union
is the major funding tool for scientific development and support for the creation of the
European Research Area (FP6).
Projects relevant to the use of plant and other organic raw materials for the production of fuels and renewable bioproducts
occur within a number of the Themes and Actions of this Programme. For convenience in finding related projects, these have
been grouped as follows:
As is fairly well known, FP6 did not specifically support non-food projects, although this topic did occur
within the section Priority 8,
Policy support and anticipating scientific and technological needs.
Priority 8's objective is to provide strong and up-to-date scientific advice to help shape community
policies. The
EPOBIO Project (FP6), which now includes future
developments of the activities making available results of RTD projects supported by the European
Commission in the area of Biological Materials for Non-Food Products (Renewable Bioproducts),
has been funded under this section of FP6. This was in response to the call document that included text on dissemination
"....... the dissemination of results within this sector is essential to success. A one stop entry point such as the BIOMATNET
model for resaearch results and regulatory data and information on an EU, national and global level
is necessary for both data mining and as a forum for future development and progress"
EPOBIO has a wider remit than that of the previous BioMatnet activity. In particular it
- includes indepth analysis of the area, including economic, environmental and consumer aspects
- includes detailed studies on a number of priority topics, plant cell walls, lipids and biopolymers.
- incorporates cooperation between the EUand the US and will cover activities on a global basis.
For this reason the scope of information covered has also been widened in selecting the projects for presentation
inthe above themes.
In response to a submission to the call
