Abstract
The general aim of the project is to improve the technology and it is expected that this will reduce the cost of producing ethanol by 10-20% in the medium to long term. The technological objective is to improve the design and performance of the key steps in the lignocellulose-to-ethanol process, which contribute to the overall system efficiency and cost effectiveness; pre-treatment, enzyme development and increased process integration. This project is aimed at innovations based on new biotechnical process methods, with positive outlooks in terms of technical and economical developments. The technoeconomical evaluation of the proposed process aims at ascertaining production costs and the use of energy, and assessing the environmental impact by the use of Life Cycle Analyses.
