Abstract
ARBRE is an 8 MWe Biomass-fuelled Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (BIGCC) plant built by Arbre Energy Limited at Eggborough, UK. The primary objective of Project ARBRE is to demonstrate that BIGCC technology has reached industrial reliability and can therefore be scaled-up and replicated internationally. The main objectives of the ARBRE TYPHOON contract were:
The main aim of the project is to demonstrate the efficient generation of electricity from biomass at a relatively large scale. IGCC technology is employed since it is recognised as the most efficient process for power generation. It was expected that project ARBRE would contribute to the aim of increasing the energy conversion efficiency above 35% for small-scale gas turbines. The second generation plant based on BIGCC technology is expected to further improve the efficiency to 45%. Reduction in CO2 emissions of 58 million tonnes per annum will be demonstrated by the operation of the ARBRE plant using a CO2 neutral and low sulphur- and chlorine-containing energy crop.
Participants
Since the technical and financial scale and challenges faced by Project ARBRE cannot be satisfactorily resolved by any single company or country, a European partnership comprising Kelda Group Plc (under the non-regulated subsidiary First Renewables Ltd.) (UK), TPS Termiska Processer AB (S) and Alstom Power UK Limited (UK) was formed.
Kelda was the coordinator of the EC contract and was responsible for the overall project management, plant engineering and fuel supply technologies and logistics. TPS is the gasifier technologist and Alstom is the gas turbine technologist.
