Abstract
The goal of CLEANTOOL is the development, test and dissemination of an integrated evaluation and design tool for cleaning processes in the metal industry together with a network of around 100 companies in five countries. The system will be interactive and designed to present company specific solutions for a large number of cleaning operations in the metal industry.
Four aspects of optimisation will be covered; the technology of cleaning, the quality of cleaning, the economy and the impact of the cleaning process for the environment and the work environment.
The companies will have free access to the data and get their own process specific solutions. Strategically, it is important that SMEs play an active role during the development. The main non-technological objective is to show that innovation can be made faster and easier by such an approach.
CLEANTOOL started in 2001 as a new European Innovation Project whose goal is to create a database of best practice for the cleaning of metal surfaces. Objective information will be provided to a llow enterprises to choose the optimum cleaning process for their business. The database/software should be ready in 2004.
Metal cleaning is often seen as a basic task that requires little thought or consideration, yet substantial benefits may be gained by taking a fresh look at this process. The Cleantool database will allow users to make the best choice of cleaning application by providing comprehensive information on key areas:
The database, to be available through the Internet, will provide objective information in text, image, and video format on metal cleaning processes in a wide range of industries. It will also be interactive, allowing users to submit data to and receive guidance and ranked recommendations. Over 250 different processes from 5 European countries will be featured, with each item evaluated prior to publication by expert Advisory Groups.
