Abstract

The overall objective of this project is to support the realisation of Bioenergy in the EU by demonstrating an innovative technology, which can be applied for the medium scale applications 0.5 - 5 MWe) for which a very large market is known to exist. The project will also have a significant effect on the socio-economic aspects of sustainable development and will be assisting the EU towards meeting its Kyoto obligations.

In more detail, the project will demonstrate the efficient gasification of biomass residues to a fuel gas, the innovative and efficient catalytic conversion of tars, the continuous & stable combustion of the clean fuel gas in a gas engine/generator of nominal rating of 1 MWe, the operational reliability of the complete plant and significantly lower environmental impact compared to fossil fuels. Also, the project will solve a major environmental & disposal problem concerning biomass residues, which is faced by numerous local authorities in the regions of the EU.

Consortium

The consortium is led by ENVITEC, the most experienced company in Greece on environmental technology, while expert teams from Vrije Universiteit Brussel (B), Universidad Complutense de Madrid (E), Municipality of Nea Makri (GR) and Jenbacher AG (A), provide technical expertise for the design of the plant. In addition, the plant will solve a major environmental problem for the Municipality of Nea Makri (EL), while at the same time assisting with the integration of bioenergy projects with the local community.
