Contract No: NNE5-2000-00168
Project Type:
Start Date: 01-06-2001
Duration: 36 months
Total Cost: 1,170,000 EUR
EC Contribution: 795,613 EUR
Scientific Officer:

PyNe and GasNet held a meeting in Strasbourg in October 2002. Proceedings from this event are available.

Objective:

This project will establish a cluster of two Networks on thermal processing of biomass for fuels and electricity. One network will address gasification and the other pyrolysis. Each network will have its own work programme, but both will have a common focus of addressing commercialisation issues and providing support for more rapid and more effective implementation of all the technologies in the market place.

There will be joint tasks that involve both Networks and provide common approaches including pyrolysis of waste for gas production, market assessments, economics, legislative impacts, health and safety, bio-fuel standards and incentives for bio-energy. The Networks will function through a regular programme of meetings and workshops that will address a range of technical and economic issue that affect those industries that are developing and potentially using these conversion processes.

Outputs include a regular newsletter, websites and technical reports that address all the issues under consideration. The Cluster Co-ordinator will provide administrative support to manage the Network while an Executive Group of the two Network Leaders will oversee the integration and interactions between the two networks. The output will be the establishment of a comprehensive trans-European forum on thermal biomass conversion that will cover all the technical and economic issues.

GasNet is the Gasification Network for thermal conversion of biomass to power and/or heat. It is a global network of active researchers, developers and implementers of biomass gasification. It comprises 20 members, of which eight are from industry, and has been established to provide a European forum for the discussion exchange and dissemination of information on new scientific and technological developments on biomass gasification and related technologies for the production of heat, electricity or combined heat and power. It holds regular meetings, seminars, conferences, workshops and technical visits and publishes a bi-annual newsletter, the GasNet newsletter.
