Contract No: QLK5-1999-31377
Project Type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Start Date: 01-02-2000
Duration: 36 months
Total Cost: 2,415,563 EUR
EC Contribution: 2,030,277 EUR
Scientific Officer: Ignacio SEOANE

Abstract:

ESTABLISH addresses the impact of recultivation of land under arid climatic conditions, on eroding and saline soils by reforestation. To enable economically feasible afforestation, to recreate favorable microclimatic conditions and for wood production in stressful environments, stress-tolerant tree species will be identifIed in the genus Populus using combinations of molecular, ecophysiological and morphological markers and by testing these markers in established field plots. New plantations will be implemented and already existing plantations of Quercus and Eucalyptus will be extended. The tools developed by ESTABLISH can be used for conventional and biotechnological breeding programmes. Propagation protocols for genotypes with desired properties and genomic markers will be available for practical use.
