Abstract:

Gene banks have documented enormous amounts of genetic material. In the near future, a boost to new genetic information will be generated when large collections will be fingerprinted for numerous molecular markers to get a detailed description of the diversity at the molecular level. The explosion of data will pose serious problems on data access and analysis. The proposed project will solve these problems. The consortium will develop and evaluate an integrative information system with many novel analysis methods. The result will be a better informed and cost-effective germ plasm management and exploitation system for the benefit of agriculture in the EU and world-wide. To achieve this, a mulltidisciplinary consortium of worldleaders in (bio)informatics, statistical genetics, gene banks and marker technology was formed, and end-users from the international gene bank and breeding community were added.
