Abstract:

Virgin and recycled fibres used for the production of boards are damaged during their lifetime by various treatments. By applying enzymatic treatment or optimising chemical, physico-chemical, mechanical treatments during the recycling process, we propose to restore the fibre properties in order to manufacture papers and boards with higher mechanical strength. The phenomena of fibre degradation and of restoration will be studied with care, using new methods and tools, in order to contribute to a better understanding of these mechanisms and to give recommendations to the paper industry how to prevent or to limit fibre degradation. The main consequence will be an improvement of fibre quality after multiple recycling and thus an increase in the recycling rate of packaging materials.
