Abstract:

Locusts and grasshoppers are key pests in several parts of Europe and the neighbouring regions. Current control relies on broad-spectrum chemical pesticides. Many thousands of hectares are sprayed each year, often in areas of major conservation value. The aim of this proposal is to reduce the environmental impact of these control operations through the development of a new environmentally susbainable strategy, based on the use of a mycoinsecticide. The mycoinsecticide has been developed and tested in Africa and its safety and efficacy proven. However, the capacity to produce and use this new technology effectively in Europe does not exist. This project will create this capacity providing immediate benefits for biodiversity and, additionally, will create new opportunities for exploiting microbial agents for control of other pests.
