Introduction

Operational problems that appear, or strengthen, during an increased portion of demanding biomass residues in feedstocks are fouling and corrosion of heat transfer surfaces, bed agglomeration and feeding problems. In addition, emissions can exceed the plant limits.

Fouling, corrosion and bed agglomeration will be reduced by optimising feedstock composition and co-firing conditions by improving the process control with a new sensor and advanced probing, and by developing and optimising assisting chemicals.

Feeding problems will be solved by process investigations. Emissions are reduced by transferring toxic elements from the finest fly ash to coarse fly ash and by transferring toxic gaseous compounds from flue gas to coarse fly ash

An improvement in prediction potential for operational problems and modelling tools for emissions of toxic elements and particles will assist problem solving.

Activities

The project activities will b carried out as described in the following workpackages

• WP1 Fuel delivery, treatment and analysis
• WP2 Creating a basis to replace parts of brown coal with biomass waste in large Polish CFB plants,
• WP3 Creating a basis to replace a higher share of coal with MBM in a CFB plant
• WP4 Improving calculation tools and biomass fuel flexibility in small BFB plants
• WP5 Combustion problem solution by chemicals
• WP6 Means of reaching a high share of household waste in FBs and developing an alarm sensor of corrosive flue gases for FB combustion
• WP7 Management, implementation, and reporting

Impact and exploitation

• The means and guidelines to burn risky biomass residues safely
• Optimisation of flue gas cleaning to reach emission limits
• Improved modelling tools on the distribution of toxic elements and decreased aerosol formation by additives will assist in more effective cleaning of flue gases
• New, useful and relatively cheap sensors of corrosive flue gases
• Well-documented use of chemicals for the reduction of emissions and operational problems
• Improved prediction tools to reduce the need to conduct risky experiments in full-scale power plants reducing economic risks and ensuring energy production to communities and industry without unexpected shut downs
• Combustion of biomass residues decreases CH₄ emissions by several magnitudes compared to a landfill with an equal mass of waste.
