EESD (Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development) : Thermochemical Conversion

Proposal No: NNE5-2000-00461
Date Prepared: February 2004
Source: European Bio-Energy Projects (EUR 20808)

Introduction

Today, forestry and agricultural residues, including rice husks, cotton ginning, straw and wood waste, appear as the most economical renewable energy recourses for heat and electricity production, substituting expensive oil products and natural gas. Ver y positive results are experienced in many application areas in agroindustry (for example, the fruit and vegetable industry, drying of agriculture products etc.), district heating of rural areas, combined heat and power production etc.

Within the European Union, major efforts have been initiated for increasing the use of agricultural and forestry residues driven by various strategic energy, environmental, rural and regional development needs.

The main objective of the project was the promotion of EU agro-industry residues combustion technologies, developed by European SME manufacturers, in third world countries with high biomass potential. Specifically the scope of the project was the promotion of innovative combustion technologies for the energy production from cotton, rice and wheat residues.

These agricultural residues present operational problems due to the high concentration of inert and ash in the feedstock, which causes serious maintenance problems and long downtime periods. Few EU SME boiler manufacturers have developed specific technologies to overcome these problems. There are state-of-the-art systems that have been developed in the EU but the main markets for these are outside the EU in countries with an abundance of agricultural and forestry waste.
