The aims of the project are to:
Benefits and Beneficiaries
In the papermaking process, chemical manufacturing aids are used in addition to the fibres and fillers that make up the bulk of the paper. Reduced process performance and serious production failures are caused by neutralisation reactions between these manufacturing aids and detrimental anionic substances occurring as pollutants. This can result in deposits on machine parts, specks in the paper, machine downtimes owing to web breaks as well as increased chemical consumption and higher effluent loads. These effects increase the costs of paper and board production and increase the environmental impacts of the process. In addition, these contaminants can increase energy consumption.
The project is expected to provide solutions for more effective control of these detrimental substances, which originate primarily from fibrous materials in the papermaking process. When implemented the proposed measures are expected to reduce production costs and make an important contribution to consistent product quality.
