Preface

Biomass is not a new energy source and the use as a fuel is substantial in many parts of the world. Globally, biomass contributes with about 15% of total energy needs. Within the EU, biomass satisfies around 3% of total primary energy needs. The prospects for increasing the use are driven by various strategic energy, environmental, rural and regional development needs, many of which are described in the recent European Commission White Paper on "Energy for the future, renewable sources of energy". Overall the future global prospects for the increased use of biomass is positive. As the prevention of climate change and other environmental concerns will grow, the fossil energy resources will continue to be depleted.

Since the big oil crises of the 1970's there have been considerable scientific and technological developments in the area of renewable energies, especially through the support of European Community research and demonstration programmes. In the fourth Framework programme, biomass for energy plays an important role in the specific programmes FAIR and JOULE/THERMIE. This unique catalogue brings together all biomass energy related projects funded therein. It includes activities managed by DG XII (Science, Research and Development) as well as those projects managed by DG VI (Agriculture and Rural Development). It also covers the demonstration projects by DG XVII (Energy).

This diversity of funding reflects the broad scientific and technical scope of energy from biomass across the complete production, processing and utilisation chain. This extends from basic research in plant, through breeding and selection, production, harvesting, drying, storing, processing and conversion (chemical, thermal or biological) to combustion which generates heat and electricity, including combined heat and power systems. The research also includes production of liquid biofuels for transportation. Biomass refers to agricultural crops, trees and residues, municipal, agricultural and industrial non-hazardous and non-toxic solid sludge wastes and effluents. There are currently wide differences in the actual deployment of biomass technologies. The catalogue illustrates that in areas such as combustion, anaerobic digestion, landfill gas utilisation and the use of rapeseed methyl ester for liquid transport, commercial technologies are becoming available. Other technologies such as gasification, pyrolysis and direct combustion still require more research, or are in the process of being demonstrated on a larger scale. The extent of funding reflects the importance of biomass in the future European Union energy policy. This is indicated in the White paper which defines a strategy and action plan to promote the market for renewable energies. A specific target is to double the use of biomass by 2010. In this respect this catalogue is an invaluable guide to the current state-of-the-art and the results generated will be a useful input to the action plan for the shaping of a future, sustainable biomass market.
