Conversion of a lignite coal-fired system into a biomass fuel system, partially using
contaminated recycling timber in the Wolfen power station
Objectives
The main objective is the conversion of a lignite coal-fired system into a biomass-fuelled system, as
a demonstration project.
Technical Approach
The technical objectives include:
- Obtaining long dwell times at high combustion temperatures.
- Maintaining the firing heat capacity and the process parameters for the use of energy.
- Maximisation of power production within a combined cycle system (coupling of power and heat
generation) by utilising biomass fuels.
- Adaptation of the firing system to a wide fuel band of biomass and recycling materials.
- Utilisation of the existing steam generator as well as the off-sites for energy production and
conversion.
- Provision of energy independently of CO2
- Design of a firing system with a high thermal power to comply with biomass fuels and recycling
timer with a high calorific value.
- Choosing a high dwell time at high combustion temperatures independently of biomass fuel.
- High combustion chamber end temperatures while using biomass fuels.
- Maintaining the high steam parameters in spite of the relatively low ash softening temperatures.
- No restrictions to process parameters through the fuel type, the definition of these parameters being
effected purely for energetic materials.
- Mixed firing of biomass fuels with contaminated residual and recycling materials.
- Utilisation of a flue gas cleaning system according to the waste combustion rule (17.BlmSchV) to
obtain minimum emissions and for the utilisation of impregnated recycling timber.
