Best Management Practices for the Productive/Protective Rehabilitation of Forested Sloping Areas (PRO-LAND)
Duration 1994-1996

STD PROJECT (Science & Technology for Development)

The objective of BTU's work within this project is the development of a multicriteria analysis model for supporting the choice of the best and sustainable method of soil management, where the problem of deforestation is severe and there are in high slopes. The areas of study are in Central America, where the phenomenon of soil erosion is presently very intense.

The main problem of these areas is the that of soil erosion which results from the combination of the following factors:

The criteria that are taken into account for the development of the model are:

  1. The impacts from soil erosion to the yield of cultivated lands in relation to the practices that are suggested for the soil loss inhibition. The estimation of the impacts on productivity is calculated by using the model Erosion Productivity Impact Calculator (EPIC).
  2. The increasing use of fertilisers due to loss of productivity and the subsequent effects on the production costs.
  3. The produced imbalance to nutrinional needs of the population
  4. The external costs from the loss of valuable soil which is considered as a capital that is consumed regardless from the impacts on productivity. The estimation is done by using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE)
  5. The external cost of the fertilisers leaching and consequently contamination of groundwater bodies.
  6. The impacts on the biodiversity of the above mentioned areas.
