Network on Bio-products from Agricultural Raw Materials:
Research & Technological Development towards High Value Added Market
Outlets (BIO-PATH)
Duration 1993-1996
COPERNICUS PROJECT
BIO-PATH is a European R&D Network having the following objectives:
- to promote the ideas and approach of BIO-PATH (see below)
- to inform appropriate audiences about the topics of the Network and disseminate
its work and
- to attract new members to join its ranks
The formation of the BIO-PATH Network is based on the following two complementary
ideas:
- The industrial utilisation of biological resources especially of agricultural origin
could act as a lever for development in European rural areas and less developed regions;
in particular CEE countries could benefit from such industrial applications in their effort to
restructure their economies.
- In order to support this potential growth research has to be appropriately oriented to
meet the needs not only of a single conversion stage but of a rather long "chain" i.e., a
true BIO-PATH leading from the biological resources being utilised to the respective bio-products
and their end-users.
These central ideas are demonstrated by the present network activities focusing on the
conversion of the hemicellulose fraction of agro-biomass to high value-added products by an
appropriate combination of biological, chemical and physical processes.
The biological raw materials considered in the present network activities are agricultural
residues and wastes of lignocellulosic composition mainly wheat straw and corn cobs.
