Pathways from Scale Experiments to Sustainable Regional Development (EXPRESS PATH)
Duration 1993-1994

ENVIRONMENT PROJECT

The objectives of this research project include the followings

  1. Identification and analysis of critical driving forces and barriers for enterprises social movements and other organisations to take initiatives in the area of renewable energies utilisation
  2. Documentation and assessment of recent history of technology diffusion in selected case studies including
    • solar heating (Greece, Austria)
    • wind power (Denmark) and
    • biomass use (Austria, Denmark, Greece)
with respect to sustainable regional development and
  3. Description of most promising diffusion mechanisms, investigation of possibilities for their enhancement at various stages of implementation; review and discussion of relevant methodological tools and policy options

This 2-year project which was financed in the framework of socio-economic environmental research area (SEER) Environment research Programme Commission of the European Communities (DG XII) was a collaborative and interdisciplinary effort of R&D groups from Austria, Denmark and Greece. Its methodological approach involves field and desk research on the above mentioned case studies, theoretical analysis in the areas of technology diffusion, sustainable development and policy analysis.

Biomass for energy has been shown to already occupy a significant position among the renewables in the energy balances of the three countries as is the case in most European countries. Moreover due to the considerable existing opportunities further deployment of bioenergy use is currently viewed by many European policy makers as a major alternative option for reducing carbon dioxide emissions, towards a more sustainable energy economy. Therefore the EXPRESS PATH analysis of biomass technologies diffusion with particular emphasis on their environmental and socio-economic effects on regional development, could be of interest to policy makers researchers and social groups organisationas concerned.
