Objectives
This is a European project, which will contribute to an increased - and more efficient - use of solid
biomass, biogas, waste and landfill gas for combined heat and power (CHP) production. The
project will run from 2003 to 2006 and disseminate information on experience with biomass fuelled
CHP based on collected data from 60 existing CHP plants in Denmark, The Netherlands, Austria,
Germany, Sweden and Finland.
BIO-CHP is partly funded by the European Commission Altener programme.
The aim of the BIO-CHP project is to
- Promote biomass CHP in Europe by displaying experiences from solid
biomass (including co-firing), Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), anaerobic digestion
gas and landfill gas fuelled CHP plants and highlighting plants with the best
operation
- Provide authorities and future plant owners information about
what performance to expect from biomass CHP plants and about best available
technologies. This will help ensuring high quality of future plants.
- Enable benchmarking and thus identify the potential for improvement of
the existing European CHP plants
- Replicate best practices on the operation of biomass CHP plants by
extensive dissemination activities
- Create a network for exchange of good and not so good experiences with CHP
Activities
The BIO-CHP project work will take place within the following phases:
- Characterise and select CHP plants and confirm their participation - this is the preparatory phase
where the framework for the collection, analysis and dissemination will be defined. 60 plants will be
selected amongst all existing biomass CHP plants in the partner countries, their participation will be
arranged and the data handling and processing planned.
- Collecting data (Phase 2) will last for two years and will comprise of the collection and processing
of monthly operational data from the selected plants.
- Regularly dissemination of informationwill occur in Phase 3, where a European network of
stakeholders will be established and the project will liase with existing networks. Data will be published
on a regular basis in electronic newsletters and on the website.
- In Phase 4 a Best Practice Guide for the use of biomass in CHP plants will be drawn up based
on the gathered experiences from the existing plants. The guide will be aimed at and be useful for
new plants for example.
- A workshop at the end of the project will provide an opportunity for the stakeholders to meet and
participate actively in the network by exchanging experiences.
