Abstract

The cluster "Solid Biofuels" is formed by 5 independent projects covering different aspects of the energetic use of solid biomass. The common aim of all projects is to increase the use of solid biomass for heat and power production. The component projects are as follows:

1. Dissemination of the course manual "Biomass Energy Course" (FNR, BTG)

Objectives: Update and disseminate a biomass training course manual developed in the frame of a previous Altener project. The work carried out is as follows:

  • Assessment of target groups, training needs, existing material.
  • Adaptation of the existing material and development of new material.
  • Translation and printing.
  • Dissemination via conferences, workshops, specialised media, internet etc.

The expected results are that potential users (e.g. heating engineers, farmers, energy consultants) will increase their knowledge about biomass and thus be able to convince private households, municipalities etc. to consider biomass as an alternative for heat supply.

2. Biomass logistics - establishment of a logistic chain to improve and promote the energetic use of solid biomass in two model regions (FNR, ERBE)

Objectives: Establish a logistic chain for biomass supply in two regions with low current use of biomass for energy production

The work required:

  • Determination of target regions.
  • Information on available biofuel qualities, prices, biomass heating technologies and suppliers. Information and incorporation of farmers, foresters, fuel merchants, heating engineers, chimney sweeps, local authorities and customers to establish a supply network.
  • Final assessment and dissemination to other regions

As a result biomass supply is ensured and energetic use of biomass has increased in the target regions

3. Renewable Energy from Wood (BPC, AP Forestry AB, TFF)

Objectives: : Familiarise decision makers in government, parliament, municipalities, enterprises with the potential for heat/power generation from wood in Scotland

This project aimed at preparation of a 20 page publication providing a clear and concise analysis of the wood fuel potential for Scotland and incorporating experience from Sweden. Dissemination of the document should lead to more biomass based heat and power plants in Scotland.

4. Dissemination and implementation programme to foster the use of wood fuel (EAOF, EFO, O.Ö.E.)

Objectives: To foster the development of fuel wood for the energy supply of buildings in the East-West cross-border areas of Oberfranken/North-West Bohemia and Oberösterreich/South Bohemia

The work covered:

  • Fuel wood potential, regional distribution and supply structures.
  • Economics of wood energy and financial models for investment projects.
  • Local, regional and European dissemination activities.
  • Realisation and implementation of fuel wood plants

As a result increased awareness and practical application of fuel wood in the model regions of the project is anticipated.

5. An Evaluation of Small Scale Combined Heat & Power from Biomass within the Woodworking Industries (RHP, ARC, BS, CIRCE, Aston University, Gruebl)

Objectives: Evaluation of small scale combined heat&power (<400kWe) from biomass within wood processing industries through:

  • Evaluation of four of the most promising technologies in the context of a specific wood processing site.
  • Technological evaluation and assessment of CHP technology applied to Butterleigh Sawmill.
  • Study Tour to CHP sites in Austria.
  • Determination of CHP potential within wood
  • Dissemination:

This activity is expected to lead to greater awareness of the opportunities of small scale CHP amongst saw mill owners, wood processing industries and other key people who are required for the successful implementation of CHP projects.
