Type of Project Shared Cost
Contract No JOR3-CT98-0249
EC Contribution 309 000 ECU
Start Date 1/07/98
Duration 30 Months

Objectives
The objective of the project is to carry out a feasibility study of a bioelectricity plant. The plane would be sited in Valdecaballeros (Badajoz province, Spain) and feeded with Cynara cardunculus biomass (as an energy crop), natural biomass (brushwood. Cistus ladaniferus) and agricultural and forestry residues, in the ratio determined by the availability of these resources.

Technical approach
The implementation of a biomass power plant in a selected area requires a study of the availability of biomass resources in the particular regional conditions. The project will based on the data obtained in the BIOSTR Project ( JOR3-CT95-0039) in the biomass resources assessment in the Valdecaballeros area . In this project a real on site checking of the BIOSTR Project results will be carried out in a 30 km radius of the selected area, considering the attitude of farmers and industrial biomass managers and including field tests on Cynara cardunculus energy crop in representative locations of the zone. It will be complemented with the study of the social acceptance of the biomass scheme and the management of biomass supply, identifying local anal regional potential actors that could be involved in the commitment to supply the fuel in a persistent way during the plant life time.

The next stage is to study the thermochemical conversion process of the biomasses selected at pilot plant level, including necessary pretreatments. The combustion bed fluidized technology has been chosen due to it presents relevant advantages from an energetic efficiency and environmental point of view.

The demonstration plant of this study is planned to have a power output of about 10 MWe, according to the suggestion of the industrial partner of the project. The feasibility study includes the study of basic engineering of the plant, construction, operation and maintenance strategies, cost estimates and the socio-economic and environmental impacts, on the selected zone as well as the management strategy for electricity production.

Expected achievements and exploitation
The evaluation and integration of results from the project will result in a decision on the feasibility of biomass power plant on the selected zone. This study will demonstrate the feasibility of biomass-to-electricity schemes adapted to Spanish conditions, that could be transferred to other Mediterranean countries.
