Crops for Pharmaceuticals/Cosmetics

Common Name COLUMBINE
Latin binomial Aquilegia spp.
Plant family Ranunculaceae

Columbine is familiar as a component of herbaceous borders, many varieties and hybrids with highly- coloured flowers having been bred for ornamental purposes. Various parts of the plant have, in the past, been used as sources of medicinal preparations. Investigations have commenced into the culture of this species as an agricultural crop, since the seed oil has potential value in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.
