Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) |

The quinoa plant is an annual, in appearance being a more robust version of its close relative, the common arable weed fat hen (C. album). The root system is deeply-penetrating, with many laterals.

Mature height varies between types, up to 3 m, but more usually 1.0-1.5 m; the stems are erect, ridged, and pithy, sometimes coloured, and with variable amounts of branching.

Leaves are mid-green, alternately arranged, the lower ones usually approximately arrow-head shaped with indented margins, the upper simpler and narrower; when young, leaves are covered with silky hairs.
