AIR Cluster IX - Forestry : Wood (Lignocellulose)

Contract No AIR3-CT94-1883
Total Cost 71 060
EC Contribution 71 060
Start Date 01/01/1995
Duration 36 months

OBJECTIVE:

  1. To address and integrate the current national programmes on widespread and damaging forest pest species.

  2. To propose forest management frameworks that contribute to lowering populations of defoliating pests in an environmentally sensitive way, thereby improving forest productivity in the Community and maintaining environmental quality.

Sitka spruce, a major forest crop in many parts of Northern Europe is frequently attacked by the green spruce aphid, a defoliating insect native to Norway spruce. The insect profits from mild winter conditions in the North-western maritime regions. Further climatic warming may exacerbate the pest problem in other European forests in future. The pest causes significant damage and reduces Sitka forest productivity, and may hamper the development of its natural host in continental areas.

A publication relating to this project is available. The volume of a collaboration between forest research institutions in the four European states who participated in the Concerted Action, and a number of other contributors whose work is highly relevant to the project
