AIR Cluster IX - Forestry : Forestry : Wood (Lignocellulose)

Contract No AIR2-CT93-1538
Total Cost 300 300
EC Contribution 300 300
Start Date 01/11/1993
Duration 36 months

OBJECTIVE:

Based on the summary of the problem areas in the concerted action 'Rationalisation of harvesting operations', an 'umbrella' model for a continued concerted action has been set up.

The model emerges from the fact that the low prices for thinning products might lead to rising negative contribution margins unless the harvesting costs are reduced. The model also takes into consideration the environmental consequences of harvesting operations and the need for forest management tools.

The 'umbrella' model:

Cost effective harvesting methods for early thinnings in multipleuse forests with consideration to sustained yield and ecological and environmental conditions.

The Concerted Action is subdivided in the three projects:

Each project will be the subject of an annual meeting where a status is produced based on input of each of the participating countries. Invited speakers will shed light on special problem areas. Each country will be represented by at least two participants. One will represent research and the other forest industry or the forest machine industry.
